One of the largest issues I have tackled during my time in the Michigan Legislature is the health of our state's children. We must do more to educate our kids about nutrition and physical fitness. I support putting requirements on school districts to develop physical education programs and establish health plans for their students. I've worked with Southwest Michigan school nutrition directors and promoted the 'Farm to Schools' initiative to ensure that fruits and vegetables from Southwest Michigan farms make it to Southwest Michigan schools.

Focusing on better nutrition and promoting physical activity at an early age helps children develop self-esteem, reduces stress and establishes the foundation for a lifetime of healthy habits. It will also save taxpayers millions if not billions of dollars in the long run through lower health care costs and increased productivity.
